THE POPULOUS BIBLE
K.25 DxWnd
When enabled, this program allows you to play in windowed mode. Might fix colour problems, lag, instant alt-tab, etc. Probably works on multiple monitors.

"This has been integrated into the matchmaker now! All you have to do is right click the matchmaker's icon, select "Run as administrator", then go to options, Populous tab, and at the top-right enable DxWnd."
This will also remove the black screen that temporarily shows up after the game is started, eliminating the delay, and it will make alt+tabbing from the game to your desktop immediate, possibly eliminating the lag spike that occurs when the host does that.
-
Get DxWnd. This is a program usually used to run games in a window, but you can use it to run Populous fullscreen and with fixed colors.
-
Run DxWnd.
-
Drop down the "Edit" menu and select "Add", or right click an empty space in the list and click "Add".
-
Set the name to anything. Click the "..." button next to "Path", and select the popTB.exe file from your Populous folder.
-
If you'd like to run Populous fullscreen: Set the "Windows initial position & size" X and Y values both to 0, and the W and H values to match your desktop resolution. (not your Populous resolution!) To see the desktop resolution you're using, right click the desktop and click "Screen resolution". For example, for 1920x1080, set X 0 Y 0 W 1920 H 1080.If you'd like to run Populous in a window: Set the"Windows initial position & size" X and Y values to the position of the window, and the W and H values to the size of the window. You can set these as you desire, but it'd be best for both of them to be your Populous resolution multiplied by an amount so that graphics do not look stretched.
-
Set "Primary surface" on "DirectX", and "Modal style" on "Window". (this disables the window borders, which is required so that it fits fullscreen)
-
With DxWnd running, start a Populous game, no matter whether it is from the matchmaker or not. The color palette should always remain correct.
Note: You have to have DxWnd running before starting a game. Not necessary - If you followed the fullscreen instructions and your graphics look weird or badly stretched, try this:
-
Set the bottom-left X and Y values to 0, and W and H values to match the Populous resolution you use.
-
Before starting a game, right click your desktop, select "Screen resolution", and set your desktop resolution to the same you use in Populous.
-
After finishing the game, right click your desktop, select "Screen resolution", and set your desktop resolution as it was.
